AED.us carries EVERY AED pad available, by any and all AED pad manufacturers. AED pads, also called “electrodes,” use adhesive to stick to the patients torso. The wires, or “leads,” to/from the AED pads communicate to the AED with a diagnosis of the patient. If a shockable heart rhythm is detected, the AED will discharge an electrical current through the leads, AED pads and, ultimately, the patients body. The purpose of the electrical shock is to allow the heart to “restart” a normal rhythm. AED pads are placed on slightly different areas of the patient’s torso, depending on size and shape.
Some AEDs have different pads for pediatric patients. These pads reduce the joule output to be more appropriate for a smaller patient. The general rule is that pediatric AED pads are to be used on children under 8 years old or less than 55 pounds. There are some AEDs that use the same pads for both adult and children, with the AED itself reducing the joule output. A couple of examples of these AEDs are the Philips FRx (uses a “key” to reduce energy) and Zoll AED 3 (has a button that reduces energy).
