Our First #HowToSaveALife AED Donation Winner: Lucas Lepri

At AED.us, “our goal is to place Automated External Defibrillators where they will be most effectively utilized, and Our Mission, Our Passion, Our Duty is to forge stronger links into the chain of survival.”

AED-US Lucas Lepri AED Donation WinnerAs part of our commitment to helping communities become more aware of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, we have started our first annual #HowToSaveALife AED Donation Campaign. We will be giving away over $50,000 in AEDs throughout 2018, with one being donated to a new recipient each week!

We ask you to help us by sharing our blogs featuring our Donation Recipients’ stories, follow us on social media, and help us start to spread the word. Encourage those that are in need of an AED to enter our drawings each week, and send us your stories, as we continue carrying out our mission in helping to save lives!

We proudly practice what we preach, by having every member of our team certified in CPR, First Aid, and using AEDs. Each of us has an AED readily available in our vehicles, in our homes, and at work. And naturally, we expect to see defibrillators available for bystander use when we are out in public places.

AEDs are the only device that can save someone suffering from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Victims of SCA have a much better chance of survival if CPR and an AED are used on them within the first few minutes after their heart stops beating. Every minute that passes without CPR and a lifesaving shock from an AED, lowers their chance of survival by 10%. With over 400,000 documented cases of Out-of-Hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest each year, SCA is now the leading cause of death in the U.S.

SCA is not a rare occurrence and it does not discriminate against age, health and fitness levels, or race. It will strike approximately 16 children under the age of 18 every day. 1 out of 22,903 college-aged athletes will experience SCA, and over 380,000 adults will lose their lives each year.

After reading statistics and news headlines each day, we know it is imperative that people become aware, learn CPR, and have AEDs easy to reach if they find someone experiencing cardiac arrest.

AED-US Lucas LepriWe are kicking off the #HowToSaveALife Donation Campaign with our first AED recipient, Lucas Lepri Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Head Quarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lucas Lepri is a 7x World Champion and opened his Head Quarters in Matthews, NC about 3 years ago. Lucas has developed a global following while his brand, along with Team Alliance, continues to grow. Our customer service rep, Leigh, has her entire family and many new friends spending several days each week at this gym taking classes, and they have watched his gym grow larger and larger over the past year that they have been members.

Leigh approached Lucas last month and asked if he had an AED on site. He said that he didn’t, but he had taken a CPR course recently and knew what they were. She thought this would be the perfect opportunity to introduce his growing team to CPR and AEDs. A new AED would help make her feel better about her family and friends’ safety during training and would help to spread awareness about SCA in the worldwide Jiu Jitsu community.

Lucas and his instructors were thrilled with their new Cardiac Science Powerheart G5 AED. CARDIAC SCIENCE G5They said that they hope it will never be necessary to use it, but it’s great to know it is there in case of an emergency. Leigh will be providing them with a quick CPR and AED training session next week using AED.us’ new Brayden Manikin.

Since many people only know about defibrillators from watching tv or the news, we try to help people feel more comfortable with the idea of using one. From our experience, hands-on, interactive training tools are key in teaching bystanders to identify, take action, and help out when someone is in cardiac arrest.
