For babies younger than one year old, the leading cause of death is suffocation. This changes to drowning in children 1-4 years old. For children 5-19 years old, motor vehicle crashes are the most fatal. Across all age groups, boys are more likely to suffer from injuries than girls.
For nonfatal injuries, falls are the most common reason for hospital visits amongst children 0-19. In the home, most accidents take place in the living room or dining room, but the more severe accidents happen in the kitchen or on the stairs.
